Since the first reclaimed shipping container mall was opened in Johannesburg, there’s been a ripple effect in the surrounding areas.
Melville, Maboneng, Midrand and Ivory Park have all jumped on board the hipster train, boasting malls in each area recreated from old shipping containers.
The symbolism in the act of reclaiming the containers for a new purpose is as important as the act itself, and places emphasis on the rejuvenation of the area it’s built in so as to rejuvenate the community with a fun recreational space.
- Mellville’s 27 Boxes was the first of its kind in Johannesburg and has set a standard for the use of containers. The area was once closed off to the public and inhabited by vagrants, but is now a gleaming example of the potential of the community. It’s made from 27 containers, which create space for a number of local traders, a fun zone for the children and even parking space.
- Foghound is the little-appreciated restaurant in Richards Drive in Midrand. Owners of the hangout serve the most delectable meals and aromatic coffees at the quaint little venue that really packs a visual punch; often surprising all those who see it for the first time.
- Shanty Town is also situated in Midrand and has become a playground for adults keen to take in some great live music, enjoy the shisa nyama (hot, braaied meat) and socialise with friends. A number of events are even hosted at the venue – such as the Women’s Day celebrations, which took place on 9 August.
- Maverick Corner came up in Maboneng to add to the excitement of the rejuvenated community. This hotspot boasts a restaurant, a super exciting island-style bar, an art gallery and even a nail salon to get your tips done, on-the-go. What more could you expect?
- The latest addition to the container malls of Johannesburg is the Jozi Container Micro Mall in Ivory Park, which was opened in July. It was launched to address the issue of unemployment in the area. Former mayor, Parks Tau spoke at the opening of the mall. “Research suggests that it is creating SMEs that will help us deal with unemployment,” he said.
