Saving lives one pint at a time

HYDE PARK – Pupils take the challenge to donate blood and help save lives.

Hyde Park High School embarked on a blood donation drive recently where pupils and parents sacrificed a little to save many lives.

The school, which runs an average of two to three drives a year, had 39 pints donated by parents as well as Grade 10 and 11 pupils older than 16 who met all requirements.

Avril Wright, marketing and liaison secretary, said posters advertising the drive were displayed at least a week before the day and pupils and parents who are on the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) database, received SMS notifications to alert them about this important drive. “The notification and advertising allowed the donors to ensure they had a good breakfast and did not participate in any strenuous sports in the afternoon, before making their donation.”

According to Wright, headmaster Manolis Vogiatzis is supportive of the drive and said, “The opportunity to save a life by donating a pint of blood is one not to be missed.”
