Unattended pavement issue frustrates Lyndhurst residents

LYNDHURST – JRA slammed for unresolved pavement issue in Lyndhurst.

A reinstatement of a pavement that has caused a headache for Lyndhurst residents, the Johannesburg Roads Agency has confirmed that it will be fixed.

This follows complaints from an irate resident, John Hersch, who explained that the issue had been left unattended since last year.

“In August 2015, Democratic Alliance councillor Martin Louw reported a hole in the pavement along Johannesburg Road…, which is full of weeds and [has caused] pedestrians to walk around this hole and instead walk onto the busy road,” he explained.

A frustrated Hersch also questioned why it was taking so long to resolve the issue, citing it as a hazard to pedestrians. He called on JRA to fill it in properly to avoid causing an accident and to allow pedestrians to walk on the pavement.

Responding to this was Bertha Peters-Scheepers, communications and marketing operations manager at JRA, who confirmed that the matter was a reinstatement issue and was still under investigation.

Peters-Scheepers further explained that with regard to reinstatement issues, a way leave was needed to be issued by JRA’s way leave office.

“This will only be done after a completed way leave application form has been received by the way leave officer and the reinstatement fee paid,” she said.

In granting of the way leave, the agency was cognizant of the work being undertaken by a specific entity in a particular area and after this work had been completed, the same entity is then required to send a reinstatement order to the JRA.

“We apologise for the delay and will send an inspector to the area to ensure the pavement is urgently reinstated for the safety of pedestrians,” she said.

She concluded by urging residents to report issues concerning road and storm water issues to the entity to ensure they are attended to promptly.
