Moyra’s many blessings

LYNDHURST – Moyra celebrates her 90th birthday in the company of family and friends.

What a year it has been for Moyra Levenson.

The resident of Rand Aid’s Inyoni Creek retirement village not only celebrated her 65th wedding anniversary on 14 July, but also her 90th birthday on 20 August.

Little did she know when she woke up on the morning of her birthday that she would be whisked away by her grandson to a nearby social club packed to the rafters with family and friends, all waiting patiently to shout ‘surprise’.

Moyra and hubby Albert moved to Rand Aid six years ago and said they love the village. “Everyone is so friendly. People wave at each other and neighbours care about neighbours,” said Moyra.

They lived in a house they had built on the Glendower Golf Estate for many years before that, and their son Gavin, a professional golfer, still has strong links to the club.

“We are blessed to have all our family members close by and are thankful for the love and support they show us,” said Moyra.

Albert and Moyra met when they both worked for the same insurance company, but when their children were born, Moyra decided to devote her time to raising them.

She is a keen knitter who still knits squares to be sewn into blankets for the needy. She comes from a family of eight, and both she and Albert had a grandparent who reached the grand age of 100.

About to turn 90 himself, Albert quipped that Moyra, older by a few months, was a cradle snatcher. His naughty sense of humour is legendary but Albert has another side – that of a writer and poet. He has published a novel, There is a Land and two volumes of poetry that show great insight and introspection.
