24/7 heroes save the day

PARKVIEW – Armed response officers save a resident's home from potential disaster.

A Jacuzzi pump malfunction caused a huge blaze in a Parkview residence’s garden on the morning of 8 August.

According to Sally Braham, the owner of the home, her dog Bela, a whippet cross-breed that normally shares the bedroom with her, became slightly fractious and started barking. She said her barking woke both her and her husband. At the same time, her phone rang and it was an operator from the 24/7 security control room.

“They asked if I was aware that I had a fire on my property,” said Braham.

“I asked them where it was and they informed me that it was at one of the perimeter walls and there were flames showing above [the wall].”

According to Braham, two security officers who were patrolling the area, Meshack Malele and Thabani Sibanda, had seen the fire and informed their control room.

“When we got out of the house and went to inspect, the fire was raging on the side of the property and we immediately tried to extinguish it.”

The homeowner said her insurance company, which is currently busy with an investigation, suspects that the Jacuzzi pump burst into flames due to water not running through the filter at that particular point, causing the thermostat to ignite.

Braham says she is grateful to the two officers who were at the right place at the right time and helped to prevent a possible tragedy. “If [the fire] had been left unattended, goodness only knows what the outcome would have been,” said Braham.

“I would like to send a huge bouquet out to the 24/7 guys who are always helpful and a 10 out of 10 for them.”
