PARKTOWN – There's an authentic looking Irish pub that you just have to visit when you are in the City of Joburg.

The Sunnyside Park Hotel has stood south of Parktown since 1895 and with revamped Victorian-style architecture, keeps visitors in touch with the modern world while allowing them to escape back in time to a picturesque place of beautiful gardens and facilities.

The Pound & Penny Pub has been standing alongside the Sunnyside Park Hotel for more than 30 years and was modelled using the decor of an authentic Irish pub. The friendly manager, who simply goes by the name Reggie, has been manning the venue for most of the time that it has been open.

A CLASSIC: The Pound & Penny Pub is more than 30 years old.

He has seen the pub go through a number of changes over the years. The authentic decor creates a lively ambiance that takes guests all the way to Ireland and they hold events such as St Patricks Day celebrations to add to the authenticity.

The pub comprises outdoor and indoor dining areas, with a view of the property and its luscious gardens. The venue is also perfect for watching rugby and cricket matches taking place around the world and enjoying authentic pub-style grub.

IN THE GARDEN: The Pound & Penny Pub is situated in a picturesque location.

But the pub has expanded its range of activities and, in recent years, become one one of the stops on a guided tour of the city during certain times of the year including Halloween. In 2014, management decided that the pub was no longer only good for selling authentic South African and Irish beers such as Guinness, and made the move to serving two locally brewed craft beers as well.

Moving with the times is the reason why the Pound & Penny Pub is here to stay.
