Stylish dresses for deserving princesses

HYDE PARK – 500 dresses donated for a special matric dance night.

Cardbury PS embarked on a campaign to collect pre-owned dresses fit for a matric dance for less privileged girls in Gauteng.

The #PSGiveADress campaign was launched in July and challenged the community to donate dresses in good condition to assist young girls who wish to experience the magic of a matric dance, but who are without means to do so.

Girls were invited to submit a short story motivating why they would like to win a dress. Hundreds of letters poured in and the best letters will win stylish dresses as well as some designer dresses which have been donated.

At an event in Hyde Square to celebrate the success of the campaign, Simone van Zyl, Cadbury Impulse brand manager, said the aim of the campaign was to give back to longstanding supportive consumers and to show their gratitude. “The uptake has been absolutely phenomenal. We have received to date, in over a month-and-a-half, up to 500 dresses,” said an excited Van Zyl.

“We were targeting 300 [dresses] so it’s a fantastic uplift and it’s been great.”

She said a number of companies had approached Cadbury wanting to be part of this initiative and that a partnership with The Space clothing stores allowed for accessible drop-off points for those wanting to contribute nationwide.

“On 3 September, we will be organising a distribution day where we will be inviting all the girls who submitted their stories and have been allocated dresses to come to where dresses will be on display,” said Van Zyl.

“The girls will try them on and there will be tailors who will help them fit the dresses and to find a perfect dress for their matric dance.”

Grant van Niekerk, Mondelez SA Category Lead for Chocolate said the campaign would not have been possible without the help of the community and their partners who have helped make young girls’ dreams become a reality. “We are thrilled at the response we received and look forward to getting the donated dresses into the hands of girls who need them the most,” he said.

“Going forward, we hope to continue connecting with our consumers on issues that matter to them and hope to drive an even bigger #PSGiveADress initiative in 2017.”
