Accident on Jan Smuts leaves four injured

CRAIGHALL – Taxi's abrupt stop causes accident, injuring four.

A truck rammed into a minibus taxi injuring all four passengers on Jan Smuts Avenue on 15 August.

According to an eyewitness, who is an employee and supervisor at the Caltex petrol station, it was business as usual, when suddenly a loud bang followed by screams stopped him dead in his tracks.

“The truck hit the taxi from the back,” said the supervisor.

“[The truck pushed] the taxi for a couple of metres before it could stop.”

Both drivers escaped without any injuries when a truck hit a minibus taxi with four passengers on Jan Smuts Avenue.

He said the taxi made an abrupt stop to pick up a passenger with the truck close behind. “The truck tried to stop but it was too late.” He said he immediately called for help which arrived within 15 minutes.

Frikkie Marais, a Brits businessman and owner of the truck, said when he was made aware of the accident, he immediately sent help to the accident scene. “I don’t have all the details of the accident yet, but I have been contacted by the owner of the taxi,” he said.

JMPD officer writes a ticket following the accident between a Femsus Suppliers truck and a minibus taxi on Jan Smuts Avenue.

Marais, a construction and transport business owner, said it was a relief that there were no fatalities and hoped those injured would recover soon.

ER24’s Russell Meiring said on arrival, paramedics found the taxi on the pavement and the truck had stopped in the slow lane of Jan Smuts southbound. “The truck [ripped] into the rear of the taxi,” he said.

“It is believed that the taxi made a sudden stop which led to the accident.”

Meiring confirmed that four people were injured and taken to the nearest hospitals, including Edenvale. “The victims sustained moderate to minor injuries and both drivers emerged unharmed.”
