Suspect shot by police and one arrested

JOBURG – Police have shot and killed an armed suspect.

 

Jeppe police, together with members of Metro police, have arrested one suspect and shot and killed another recently.

According to Captain Richard Munyayi. On the same day the case was opened, police received information that two armed men were seen outside a tavern in Maboneng. “The police, together with Metro officers went to the said place and spotted the men through the description there were given. One of the suspects ran while the other one police managed to apprehend,” explained Munyayi.

Jeppe police and Metro police shot and killed a suspect after a shoot-out ensued.

Metro officers cornered the suspect who ran away at Maritzburg and Marshall streets and a shootout ensued. The suspect was shot three times, in the head, body, and leg and died on the scene. No police officer was injured.

“Two firearms and 11 live rounds, believed to be the ones robbed from the officers, were recovered. Ten empty cartridges were found on the scene. The 34-year-old suspect who had been arrested was taken to Jeppe Police Station and charged with armed robbery, attempted murder and possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition,” said Munyayi.

The firearm recovered in Maboneng which is believed to belong to a Metro officer.

The suspect will appear in court soon while investigations are continuing.

Jeppe Police Station forms part of the Johannesburg East Cluster which includes, Cleveland, Jeppe, Hillbrow, Rosebank, Parkview, Norwood and Yeoville police stations.
