Drive safely in Johannesburg

JOBURG – Drive safely through Joburg and Arrive Alive.

Arrive Alive and City Buzz wants you to keep safe while you drive in the city at night.

Arrive Alive is an organisation which aims to increase awareness of road safety in South Africa, and their tips and tricks are especially applicable when navigating through the busy streets of Johannesburg.

There are many risk factors when visiting the city at night, but as long as you take heed of the tips from Arrive Alive, there should be no reason why you can’t have a fun and safe time in Jozi.

  • Decreased visibility at night – in the social hubs of Johannesburg, where hipsters in dark clothes typically wander into the streets despite oncoming traffic, motorists are urged to keep a focused eye on the road and pavements.
  • Inexperienced drivers do not have the driving skills and concentration that come with experience – especially true in areas inhabited by young students.
  • You share the road with many drunk drivers and pedestrians returning home from bars and clubs – which is a common occurrence in Braamfontein, Newtown and Commissioner Street where residents come alive at night.
  • Sharing roads with fatigued people returning home from work – With Johannesburg roads being main commuter routes, this is especially true and more reason to remain alert.
  • Criminals are often lurking in the dark, placing objects in the road to cause crashes and rob drivers and occupants – Johannesburg CBD is notorious for both opportunistic and organised crime, so it is important to keep your windows rolled up, electronics hidden and an eye on everything lurking in the shadows.
  • Vehicle lighting cannot illuminate very far – which allows little time and space to react and bring the vehicle to a stop. This is important to consider when driving in the city where there is a lot of traffic and little space between cars.
