Moshito will not be censored

JOBURG – Speakers at Moshito launch will not be censored and neither will the musicians.

The Moshito Music Conference and Exhibition is back and is set to take place in September.

The countdown to the event was launched at a star-studded event held at the Women’s Gaol Atrium and former women’s prison which is now Constitutional Hill.

The launch was hosted by the Moshito board members, the Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, new-age rapper Gigi Lamayne and seasoned musician, Roger Lucey.

The exhibition, now in its 13th year, will take on issues faced by the country today in the hopes of creating a dialogue under the theme, Censored: When the revolution could not be televised.

Reinforcing the theme of censorship, Lucey, one of South Africa’s most revered anti-apartheid artists who was silenced for his music which reflected the social and political situation in the 70s, has been chosen as the face of this year’s concert.

Lucey will be joined with newcomer, Lamayne, who also looks to impart her perspectives of the current state of affairs in the music she makes.

Lucey explained why it was fitting to pair him and Lamayne up for the festival.

“It’s the old and the young, it’s the past and the present, but it’s challenging society through music,” said the famous musician.

Monica Newton, deputy director general of arts, culture and promotion of the department, explained that while creating dialogue was important, it was also important to consider other aspects of society that would be impacted through the festival.

“The wonderful thing about Moshito is that it reminds us of the social value and the cultural value of what we do,” said Newton.

What can be expected at the exhibition is a series of interesting topics that will be discussed by panelists. In addition, music industry practitioners, musicians, festival promoters, booking agents, music managers, and exhibitors from more than seven international music markets will come together to interact, discover talent and strike music business deals necessary for the growth of the creative industries.

Don’t miss out on the music magic at various venues around the Johannesburg CBD and surrounding areas from 7 to 10 September.
