Union of Jewish Women spread Madiba love

HOUGHTON – Union of Jewish Women honours Mandela with health campaign across the city.

The Union of Jewish Women concluded their Nelson Mandela Day commemoration with a host of activities across Johannesburg.

The Houghton-based organisation hosted its successful Catch the Cavity campaign at the Sandringham Lodge, Yad Aharon and several schools and day care centres in Alexandra from 18 to 22 July.

The campaign saw dental health packs consisting of toothpaste and toothbrushes distributed to those in need and included a visit from dental hygienists sponsored by Colgate who educated pupils on the importance of dental health.

Cindy Kree, executive director of the union, spoke of the organisation’s excitement in taking part in commemorative events once again. “[We’ve] been participating in Mandela Day since its inception and, while every project has been wonderful, members were particularly excited about this year’s project,” she said.

“The community’s response to the appeal for the items was, as always, most heartwarming and we are so appreciative. We thank all those who donated goodies, money and time to make this a day to remember.”

Kree also thanked volunteers who assisted, adding that it was the best way to honour Mandela. Furthermore, she explained that carrying out the campaign was part of the organisation’s vision to empower and support others through their various projects.

The donated dental packs were placed in sturdy bags which were sewn up by the union’s Sewing Empowerment School.
