Resident takes on robber in Winston Ridge Park

WINSTON RIDGE – Police nab robbery suspect with the help of victim.

A fearless resident recently put up a fight when he was allegedly accosted by two men who tried to rob him of his valuables in the Winston Ridge Park on 18 July.

Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela, spokesperson for Bramley Police Station, explained that while the victim was relaxing in the park following a shopping trip, two unknown men approached the 27-year-old, one of whom allegedly grabbed him from behind.

“One of the suspects then allegedly produced a firearm and ordered him to hand over his cellphone and cash, which the victim did,” Maphakela said.

The victim reported that the suspects then started searching his pockets, looking for more valuables and, at this point, a fight allegedly ensued between one of the men and the victim.

Maphakela explained that during the scuffle, a security patrol vehicle passed by and the victim started shouting for help, which alerted the security officers to the situation. “The suspect with the firearm managed to run away from the scene, but the victim managed to restrain the second one and hand him over to the security personnel.”

He was then taken to Bramley Police Station where he was detained and charged with armed robbery.

Maphakela confirmed that the accused has since made an appearance in the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court, where his bail application was denied. The matter was postponed to 4 August.
