City Kidz joins Schools SleepOut

JOBURG – City Kidz pupils are ready to take part in the Schools SleepOut for charity.

City Kidz Pre and Primary School will rise to the challenge on 28 July and take part in the Sun International School SleepOut.

A number of schools have signed up already and will participate in the event which aims to make pupils aware of the harsh realities faced by many homeless people.

Creating empathy, understanding and compassion is the aim of the CEO SleepOut and with the event now in its second year, CityKidz, situated on 18 Mooi Street in Johannesburg, is one of the schools joining hands with businesses and corporates to sleep out in the school yard and collect items for its charity of choice.

Dudu Moyo, CityKidz Pre and Primary School’s senior secretary explained why the Childhood Cancer Foundation was chosen as the school’s beneficiary. “One of our teachers had a niece who was diagnosed with cancer and this was the foundation that looked after her, so we thought it was a good initiative,” said Moyo.

The school, which was opened as a community initiative by Afhco, an affordable housing company, also wants to show its pupils that they can also give back to those in need. “We need our children to see that even though our school is an initiative, that we can also help out and do good for the community,” Moyo continued.

Grade 6 and 7 pupils will take part in the School SleepOut, while children from Grade R to Grade 5 can choose to take part with the supervision of their parents or guardians.

The school will provide fun-filled activities and games for the pupils throughout the night, while the teachers plan to interact with them in order to find out how they feel about sleeping outside and all the homeless people who do not get to sleep indoors every night.
