St Mary’s girls make Mandela Day special with knitting

WAVERLEY – St Mary's knits for charity on Mandela Day.

As South Africans took time out of their busy schedules to commemorate Mandela Day, pupils from St Mary’s School, Waverley, played their part in honouring the late Statesman by knitting blanket squares for the Warm the World organisation.

The school partnered with the non-profit organisation, which collected the knitted squares to meet the challenge of knitting 1 000 squares for those in need. The knitting marathon took place at the school on 18 July.

Warm the World is a non-profit organisation which focuses on collecting knitted squares to sew together as blankets to distribute to those in need.

The organisation has partnered with local schools whose pupils knit or sew the squares together as an outreach project; and runs centres in Alexandra, Soweto, Hammanskraal and Hillbrow where those interested are taught knitting, crocheting and sewing.
