Bramley police are appealing to local community members to help them apprehend three suspects linked to multiple bank card-related thefts at an ATM at the Shell garage on Louis Botha Drive in Bramley.
This follows a spate of incidents which saw residents’ bank cards allegedly skimmed as they tried to withdraw money from the machine.
Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela, spokesperson for Bramley Police Station, explained that, in a recent incident, a user had his card skimmed and money stolen while using the ATM.
“According to the resident, he was busy with a transaction at the ATM and as soon as he entered his PIN code, the machine ejected his card for no apparent reason,” Maphakela said.
“At that point, an unknown man allegedly came from behind and stole his card, running off with it into a car that was waiting for him nearby.”
A few minutes later, the victim received an SMS alert from his bank, notifying him of a withdrawal from his account.
Maphakela confirmed that a case was then opened at Bramley Police Station and police are investigating the matter. “We are aware of the problem of people getting their cards skimmed when using this particular ATM and we ask them to remain vigilant when using it to make a transaction,” he said.
Maphakela further confirmed that police were looking for the suspects and appealed to residents to report any suspicious activity at the ATM to the police.
