Keep vigilant: Jamming devices used to steal cars

JOHANNESBURG – Motorists and residents urged to take precautions to prevent being victims of crime.

Three armed suspects have been reported to be using car-jamming devices to steal cars that are parked on the streets in Illovo.

Police are advising motorists to remain vigilant and to ensure that all doors are locked before stepping away from their vehicles.

Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela, spokesperson for Bramley Police Station said the area was also experiencing theft out of motor vehicles and urged motorists to keep their windows closed when stationary at intersections.

Maphakela also raised concerns about jewellery thieves in the Illovo, Athol and Hyde Park areas, cautioning residents to be extra careful at all times.

“Thieves are following victims from shopping malls and targeting [people wearing] wedding rings and watches.”

He urged all shoppers in the Illovo, Athol and Hyde Park areas to keep their eyes open and to report any suspicious activity.
