SABC drama continues

JOBURG – SABC COO makes a U-turn and cancels meeting.

The behind-the-scenes drama continues to unfold at the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC).

Following the Black Friday protest that was held against censorship at the public broadcaster and the suspension of some employees, new developments have emerged.

The man behind the drama, chief operations officer, Hlaudi Motsoeneng has made a U-turn. On 1 July, Motsoeneng met with a delegation from a civil society organisation that was part of the protest led by Zwelinzima Vavi.

Among other things, the delegation demanded that Motsoeneng rescind the suspension of three employees who allegedly acted against the editorial policy of the SABC and also stop disciplinary action against three other staffers who allegedly questioned the SABC’s new editorial policy.

According to Vavi, Motsoeneng said he was not aware of the disciplinary action against the latter and promised to look into all the matters put on his table and said he would meet with the delegation on 4 July to give feedback.

Surprisingly, Motsoeneng calledVavi shortly before the agreed meeting time to cancel, but the delegation insisted on going to the SABC to meet as originally agreed. To their surprise, they were refused entry at the SABC.

The Sunday Times also reported that the African National Congress (ANC) has called on the Minister of Communication, Faith Muthambi and the SABC board to probe allegations that Motsoeneng was abusing his powers.
