Police on the hunt for driver of overturned bus on M1

NEWTOWN – Manhunt on for runaway bus driver after an accident occurred on the M1.

UPDATE: 1.30pm, 5 July.

The search is currently on for the driver of the bus involved in an accident last night on the M1 South highway in Newtown.

The driver allegedly fled the scene of the accident, which saw the bus collide with another car and overturn, resulting in passengers sustaining minor to moderate injuries.

Metro police spokesperson, Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar confirmed that the police were currently hunting down the driver following the major collision. “We are currently looking for the driver of a Marco Polo bus which was on its way to Cape Town from Park Station,” Minnaar said.

“The bus overturned just before the Crown Interchange on the M1 South, resulting in 32 people sustaining minor injuries and four more sustaining moderate injuries.”

Adding to this was EMER-G-MED, which responded to the accident and released a statement [www.facebook.com/Emer-G-Med-Pty-Ltd-247947221916217/].

According to the statement, the accident took place just after 8pm and upon the paramedics’ arrival, the scene was one of ‘utter chaos’ and resulted in about 41 people getting injured. “Paramedics immediately set up a triage area and began to assess the injured; fortunately, only 41 of the 70-plus occupants on the bus were found to have been injured in the collision, with four of them sustaining moderate to serious injuries,” the statement said.

The company also confirmed that all the injured passengers were treated for their injuries on the scene before being transported by EMER-G-MED and various other ambulance services to a variety of nearby hospitals.

Minnaar confirmed that the cause of the accident was still unclear and would be investigated. “We appeal to anyone who has been in touch with the driver since the accident to contact Metro police as soon as possible,” he concluded.
