Head boy joins business leaders for a night on the streets

BRAAMFONTEIN – Head boy rises to the challenge for charity.

The CEO SleepOut will see an employee, a student and a pupil joining business leaders in Braamfontein on 28 July for the second year to raise funds for education and the less fortunate.

For the first time, the invitation to be part of this initiative where chief executive officers of major corporations give up the luxury and comfort of their own homes and spend the night in the street to raise funds for the less fortunate has been extended to individuals with notable leadership qualities.

Darron Solomon (17), head boy of Parktown Boys’ High School, was nominated by the school and chosen by BDO South Africa to be part of the experience which will happen on the Mandela Bridge. “I’m feeling quite excited that a company like BDO has chosen me to take part,” said Solomon.

“Giving something to someone that can’t give back to you is very rewarding.”The first team rugby player said he considered himself privileged to have had the opportunity and means to get a good education from Parktown Boys’ High School and that the opportunity to be part of the SleepOut in aid of education would be worthwhile because those less fortunate would benefit immensely.

“The youth is the future of the country and education is the key,” said Solomon.

For the SleepOut, Solomon is required to raise R10 000 which will be donated to schools chosen by the host company. According to Solomon, his school has been a great support in helping him to raise the funds.

“We have been selling badges for R10 each for about a month and the support has been tremendous. My school mates give as much as they can,” he said.

“The teachers and old boys have also been donating frequently to the cause.”

On sleeping out in the cold Solomon said, “I’m definitely going to take a lot of clothes, just pack on the layers for the entire 12 hours. My mom is going to make sure that I have jackets.”
