Moyo Zoo Lake’s car park garden gets a facelift

PARKVIEW- Moyo Zoo Lake's car park garden recently received a facelift.

A concerned community member and owner of a landscaping company, Liza Lakcevic, has devoted almost two months of her time and resources to the betterment and beautification of Moyo Zoo Lake’s car park garden.

“Buses would park right next to the flower beds and people would walk through the beds and damage them and it started to really look bad,” said Lakcevic.

She said that a clean-up at the garden was a tough one as there was so much rubbish which had accumulated throughout the year. “It has been amazing to see the great response from the community; they have been noticing the area and know they can now enjoy themselves in a clean area.”

Brian Bridle, general manager of Moyo Zoo Lake, also had a hand in the facelift of the garden. He repainted the poles and had them put up once they were done. “The facelift adds to the appeal of the whole parking lot. Also, it is a bit more secure because of the barrier that has been made with the poles,” Bridle added.

Zoo Lake Users Committee chairperson, Fran Haslam was thrilled with the facelift which adds to the beauty of Zoo Lake and she commended Lakcevic for devoting her time and efforts into helping make the park better.

“This is not the end, however, we [Zoo Lake Users Committee] would like to establish a garden club which will meet once or twice a month. This will be to help get Zoo Lake to where it needs to be,” said Haslam. She also mentioned that it was in the committee’s plan to also resurface the car parks’ pavements next to the garden.

William Makgatho, City Parks’ horticulturist at the park, commented that the facelift has helped them a lot in terms of security as things will be more controlled and people will not walk over the plants. “I am more than happy with the facelift, it looks beautiful,” Makgatho concluded.

Lakcevic has said she will come back once a month to help with the maintenance of the garden and to water the plants.
