Helping the deaf

PARKVIEW – Sizwile School for the Deaf spends the day at Japari School.

Japari School in Parkview hosted six staff members and 14 pupils of Sizwile School for the Deaf.

The aim was to assist the teachers with various teaching strategies which they may be able to use for their pupils and to expose the children to new learning experiences.

Brenda Roberts, spokesperson for Japari School said it was a successful morning for both parties concerned. The teachers from Sizwile were very appreciative for the assistance and their pupils really enjoyed themselves.

“For our school it was an extremely humbling experience, as we learnt firsthand how difficult it is to learn with a disability and yet, how courageous these deaf children are and how quickly they adapt using their other senses,” said Roberts.

Roberts said pupils at Japari School were deeply touched by the deaf children and expressed a desire to have more contact with them.
