Local hero dies in hospital

JOHANNESBURG – A reaction manager at a security company, who dedicated his time and life to the safety of others, has passed away.

Savika Armed Response’s reaction manager, Maxwell Makhubo recently passed away, but his memory will live on as he continues to be thought of as a hero.

Makhubo unexpectedly collapsed on 24 May while getting ready for work and passed away in hospital on the same day.

He was very much a part of the company’s ‘family’ having been with Savika Armed Response since its inception in 2006. Makhubo was the company’s first employee.

Before joining the company, which is based in Kew, Makhubo worked for Standby Security from 1990 to 2005.

The 49-year-old worked his way up the ranks and was, at the time of his passing, a reaction manager who ensured the reaction officers were always kept on their toes.

Ravi Jiwuth, who worked with Makhubo for 25 years, described the hero as a humble man who was always willing to assist others. “Maxwell was well liked and respected by all those who worked with him. His feisty attitude, love for his company and loyalty made him one of the special ones.

“Makhubo’s military experience was part of his blood until the last moment. He was a legend for the 25 years that I worked with him and he saved my life several times.”

Makhubo was involved in operations with the South Africa Police Service and Metro police and was due to assist in the Metro police’s Squatter Operation in Sunninghill on the day he passed away.
