Property attacks discussed at Domestic Watch meeting

SAXONWOLD – Domestic workers and gardeners were empowered at the Domestic Watch Meeting held recently.

The theme of the Domestic Watch Meeting in Saxonwold for the month of May was property attacks and how one should react.

Julies Mthembu ran the meeting and stressed the importance of paying attention at each and every meeting as, one day, it could result in saving their lives as domestic workers and gardeners. “Knowledge in knowing what to do in a situation where your life is at risk is powerful. Remain calm if you are a victim of crime and do as the criminals say if they are on the property and threating your life.”

Mthembu further urged the domestic workers and gardeners at the meeting to be vigilant at all times when working on the property. She advised them to always have their panic buttons on them, as this would empower them should they notice something out of the ordinary.

“I want everyone to remember that criminals are smart and may act like they are security guards or police officers, please do not fall prey to their scams. Rather call and verify with your employer if that person is allowed on the property or not,” said Mthembu.

Felix Tshuma said he now knows the importance of making sure his keys are not visible if he is doing any work outside the gate of the property. “I know that I need to remain calm if my life is being threatened and just listen to what the criminals want if they are attacking the house or me,” he said.

Flatter Choova Dimpho expressed that she felt more empowered as she now knew what to do if the property she works on is being attacked by criminals and how to make sure she does not put herself in danger. “I am glad that I know I don’t have to fight with the criminals as I would be putting myself in danger.”
