Mina to keep girls in school

PARKTOWN - A plastic menstrual cup called Mina is launched in Parktown and will prevent schoolgirls from missing school during their menstrual cycle.

The best kept secret in female hygiene, the product Mina, was revealed by Happy With A Purpose at a launch in Parktown.

Mina, a plastic menstrual cup, is designed to collect up to three times more fluid compared to regular sanitary towels.

Zaakira Mahomed, founding director of Happy with a Purpose, said many South African schoolchildren were missing school because they had no access to sanitary products. Mahomed said Mina was the solution.

“This is more about giving dignity to our girls and women, it is about giving dignity to our communities,” said Mohamed.

She said Mina was a name that many girls identified with and would find the product easy to use and comfortable.

“We looked at the menstrual cup market in South Africa and internationally. After extensive research we had a vision on the aesthetics and Mina had to be smaller, softer and manufactured from high-grade medical silicone,” she said.

Keynote speaker, Dr Danisa Baloyi, International Women’s Forum South Africa president applauded Mahomed on her efforts to empower others. “This is a significant reflection of what it means to be an African ambassador, caring for others without expecting anything in return,” Baloyi said.

She requested all to dig deep into their pockets to ensure that girls don’t miss another day of school.

Transnet Foundation has distributed 10 000 cups to girls living in rural areas nationally and Happy With A Purpose has a dream of reaching young schoolgirls globally.
