178 suspects arrested by Johannesburg East Cluster

HILLBROW - 178 suspects have been arrested for committing various crimes.

The Johannesburg East Cluster, formerly known as Hillbrow Cluster, arrested 178 suspects from 9 to 18 May.

According to a statement from the office of cluster commander, Major General Ndaba, the suspects were arrested for committing crimes ranging from assault to attempted murder and car hijacking.

The cluster is made up of seven police stations comprising Cleveland, Jeppe, Hillbrow, Rosebank, Parkview, Norwood and Yeoville.

The suspects were arrested for the following:

  • Three for rape
  • Five for armed robbery
  • Eleven for common assault
  • Sixteen for assault with intention to cause grievous bodily harm
  • Seventeen for theft
  • One for attempted murder
  • Ten for drinking and driving
  • Eight for possession of unlicenced firearms
  • Eight for possession of drugs
  • Five for fraud
  • Three for trespassing
  • Six for malicious damage to property
  • Eight for possession of suspected stolen properties
  • Seven for shoplifting
  • Six for car hijacking
  • Six for possession of dagga
  • Nine for drinking in public
  • Thirteen illegal immigrants
  • One for kidnapping
  • One for assault of a police officer
  • Thirty two for travelling without valid tickets
  • Two for possession of dangerous weapons.

Some suspects have appeared in different courts, some have paid their fines, while others are out on bail, and some have remained in prison.
