Prints & Princesses at Henry George Gallery

PARKHURST – The Henry George Gallery will be hosting an exhibition called Prints & Princesses that runs from 5 May until the end of the month.

The exhibition, Prints & Princesses is a collaborative showing of limited edition fine art prints by third-year students of Artist Proof Studio in Newtown and emerging artists of KwaZulu-Natal’s BAT Centre.

The exhibition also includes photographic prints that have been paired with narrative by Capetonian writer, photographer and filmmaker, Andy Ellis, which is called Story. “I set out to take photos. But what I really do is make stories. Some are true, some half true, others complete fiction,” Ellis explained.

The exhibition will also showcase a number of etchings, linocuts, woodcuts and lithographs which will unpack personal experiences, critiques and solutions to the inhumane processes and outdated thinking involved in the construction and socialisation which give us the lower and upper classes – the paupers and princesses – which the entire exhibition is based on.

“This is a rare opportunity to find that sensitive, edgy and fresh print priced from R1 000 upwards that will begin or complement a personal art collection. Our gallery’s mission is to bring the best of SA art to Johannesburg. And from there, to a world which has its eyes on African art and design,” said Darryl Gray, curator of the Henry George Gallery.

Prints & Princesses and Story will be on display at the Henry George Gallery in Parkhurst until the end of May.
