Sound, lights, camera and action at Parktown Girls

PARKTOWN – An entertaining evening of musical theatre.

Parktown High School for Girls’ annual music production blew everyone away with the beautiful performance they gave on 14 April.

The production was stellar, from the lighting and music, down to the decor and props. The smooth running of the show proved that a lot of effort was put into the whole production.

The production for this year was The Sound of Music, a musical which tells the story of Maria, a woman who takes a job as governess to a large family while she decides whether to become a nun or not. She falls in love with the children and eventually their widowed father, Captain Von Trapp. He is ordered to accept a commission in the German navy, but he opposes the Nazis. Von Trapp and Maria decide on a plan to flee Austria with the children.

Head of culture at the school, Tania Botha said, “Each year we strive to make it as professional as we possibly can. With a live orchestra and proper sound and lighting, the pupils had an opportunity of experiencing what it is like to be part of something that takes commitment, dedication and weeks of hard work.”

Botha herself has directed, choreographed and produced the musical productions for the past four years. “It is something I love doing as I was once a professional performer myself,” Botha stated. She expressed how she values having an arts programme in the school. “If only every school in our country could offer each child the opportunity to discover a talent that may one day lead to a career. With the richness of our culture and the artwork and creativity, we see on our streets every day, I believe that this is something we, as a country, should look to include in our school curriculum in the future.”
