Check out the North West Market at 27 Boxes

27 Boxes is a fairly new retail centre in the trendy hub of Melville and it’s got everyone talking, thanks to the North West Market which it hosts on its upper levels every Wednesday evening.

Although most of the stores in 27 Boxes are closed by the time the market gets into full swing, the sound of music drifting down is enough to pique anyone’s curiosity.

Among the communal tables is a variety of fun, trendy stalls selling everything from handmade copper and steel jewellery, gourmet cheeses, cakes and pastries, entertaining caricatures and even organic make-up and skin care products. A DJ plays music throughout the evening and cocktails are available from the bar, as well as a selection of beers and wine.

We even caught up with Jeffrey Zaki of Pionieri Pizza,  who often set up their stall at the market to deliver their mouth-watering Neapolitan pizza’s.

“The simple reason why I love the Melville Night Market is because it is such a relaxed environment. You get there, you set up and you trade away into the night. There’s totally nothing complicated about it,” he said.

“To me, the Melville people are such an awesome community and literally are an extension of what the market is. They just solidify that ‘easy going’ atmosphere.”

Among the retailers is Emma Kelly of Pushkar Clothing , who shared her thoughts on the rejuvenation of areas such as Braamfontein and Melville.

“It has been amazing to see the transformation over the last few decades, and although our current social-political climate has been a little unstable, to say the least, it’s extremely heart-warming to experience the vibrant melting pot of talent and multi-cultured bohemian/cosmopolitan energy that is bringing together so many cultures and races in respect and peace,” she said.

Nicole Daniels, a first-time visitor of the market had nothing but praise for it. “It’s different and exciting,” she said.

“I’d like to see a few more clothing stores, and maybe a place to get some hot chocolate if it’s super cold. But other than that, it’s marvellous.”

The North West Market happens every Wednesday evening from 5pm at 27 Boxes. Entrance is free and there is secure parking available in the shopping centre.
