Dumped rubble a concern

SAXONWOLD – Dumpers take advantage of quiet street.

Residents in Saxonwold have been burdened with illegal dumping at the bottom of Lystanwold Road in Westwold Way.

According to a concerned resident, Clive Shepherd, the illegal dumping began eight weeks ago. “It started with one pile, and has recently been added to with two additional piles,” he said.

Shepherd’s main concern is that soon residents might find themselves dealing with a bigger problem. “More people will start dumping their building rubble and what will it look like?” questioned an irritated Shepherd.

He believed those dumping illegally in this street were taking advantage of its quietness. “Unfortunately, I don’t think there are sufficient residences overlooking this particular part of the road for the culprits to be identified.”

Shepherd added that he had witnessed a culprit dumping rubble there. “I observed a white Ford Bantam or Nissan driving away after having added to one of the dumps.”

Frustrating as the situation was, the resident applauded councillor Tim Truluck for stepping in to try and resolve the matter. “We really have a hard-working and hands-on councillor who responds quickly at all times,” said Shepherd.

Truluck admitted that he was aware of the situation and was trying to get the relevant city entities to come and clear the rubble.

“Because it’s on the side of the road, Pikitup has to come and take the building rubble but that cannot happen now because of the strike,” he said. “If it was in the park, then it would have been City Park’s duty to collect.”

Truluck mentioned that the rubble could have been dumped by residents themselves or either illegitimate companies that they hired to dump the rubble.

“Some residents don’t want to pay a lot of money to reputable companies who will dump the rubble where it is supposed to be dumped and end up using services of companies that end up dumping the rubble anywhere,” said Truluck.

The councillor also highlighted that illegal dumping was a common problem throughout the city.
