Robbery at Saratoga tavern leaves one suspect dead

BEREA – A recent robbery in Berea has resulted in the accidental death of one of the suspects.

The shocking incident, which took place on 17 March, occurred at a tavern on Saratoga Avenue when six suspects allegedly robbed the business of money.

Sergeant Mduduzi Zondo, spokesperson for Hillbrow Police Station, explained how the incident unfolded. “Three suspects entered the tavern in the afternoon, pretending to be customers while the other three waited outside in two getaway cars,” he said.

The three then took out a firearm and held both the cashier and manager at gunpoint, demanding money.

Zondo then explained that once the money was taken, the suspects attempted to run away but in the process, the manager was able to grab one of the suspects. “The two then wrestled for the suspect’s firearm and in the midst of the scuffle, the suspect fatally shot himself,” he said.

Zondo confirmed that the other suspects made off with an undisclosed amount of cash and have not yet been apprehended. The police also recovered a pistol from the scene.

“A case of robbery has been opened and an inquest into the death of the suspect is underway,” he said. The case continues.
