WATCH: Pikitup workers destroy Joburg city

JOBURG - Watch pikitup workers destroy the city as they rampage in protest action, flinging litter across the streets and allegedly attack commuters.

Protesting Pikitup workers have embarked on a path of destruction in the city of Joburg this afternoon as they terrorised commuters of the city.

According to an eye witness, Pikitup strikers attacked a taxi driver and a Rea Vaya bus driver on Market Street in the City of Joburg.

She said, “They were harassing people who use the Rea Vaya bus service and attempted to assault one of the bus drivers with a tree branch. They also attacked a taxi driver.”

Pikitup released a statement yesterday, saying that the strike was expected to intensify.

The statement read, “Pikitup, the City of Johannesburg’s waste management entity, is intensifying its contingency measures to counter the effects of the waste collection service disruptions, despite intimidation by some striking workers.  Residents and business owners are urged to keep bins and excess waste outside their properties to ensure that waste is collected through the contingency measures put in place. It is important to note that in certain instances collection is done during the night and may continue throughout the week until normal services resume.
