Pikitup announces plans to intensify contingency measures
JOHANNESBURG – As thousands of Pikitup employees continue with their unprotected strike, the waste management utility announced plans to intensify its contingency plans.
The contingency plans were a way to counter the effects of the waste collection service disruptions as a result of the strike by workers who are demanding salary increases and improved working conditions.
Jacky Mashapu, spokesperson for Pikitup, explained that some of these measures included collecting waste from municipal clinics, hospitals and from some of the utility’s bulk customers.
“The [daily] service is currently only taking place on a period basis while the decanting (sic) of all the garden sites is also taking place,” she said.
Mashapu added that as part of the contingency measures, no street sweeping or litter picking up would be taking place except for the various central business districts across the city while the bulky waste service will also not be offered.
Furthermore, collections will be done during the night, in certain instances, and may continue throughout the week until normal services resume.
“Residents and business owners are urged to keep bins and excess waste outside their properties to ensure that waste is collected through the contingency measures put in place,” she said.
The entity appealed to commercial customers to liaise with their customer service consultants to schedule emergency collection.
