Parking in Rosebank will soon become easy

ROSEBANK – Finding parking within Rosebank's business hub can be a motorist’s worst nightmare with narrow roads and continued development in the area putting a strain on public parking in recent years.

However, this nightmare will soon become a dream as the City has finally proposed a solution which will, hopefully, benefit all those who drive and park in the business node in the near future.

Representatives of the City of Joburg’s Transport Systems Management Department held two information sessions on 14 and 15 March to explain to the general public how their new paid parking system will be implemented.

Deputy director of the department, Nobuntu Ciko Duze, explained to those who attended the sessions that a Rosebank traffic and transport study conducted by the Rosebank Management District brought forth proposals on how to resolve parking issues within Rosebank CBD.

“The City’s future growth and development strategy aims to promote transit-orientated development, the reduction of car usage and for road users to rather opt to walk, cycle or use public transport,” said Duze.

“We want to make sure that those are the modes [of transport] of choice by the year 2040.”

The idea is to hire parking marshals through Ace Parking, a company which has already proven itself in Braamfontein having successfully eased traffic and parking congestion in the area.

The affected Rosebank roads which have been earmarked for on-street parking regulations include Keyes, Sturdee and Bath avenues; Arnold Road; and Baker and Walters streets.

The City has called for the public’s comments, participation and patience with regards to the implementation of the new paid parking system. All comments and queries can be sent to the executive director of transport, Lisa Seftel, PO Box 31923, Braamfontein 2000. Alternatively, comments and queries can be e-mailed to Thelma Ntimane of the department at thelman@joburg.org.za
