Through the Impact For Christ Ministries, an outreach group, unemployed men and women are given the opportunity to join the school and are taught by a highly qualified seamstress.
The sewing students then model their outfits and handmade products they make during the sewing course and receive a certificate of completion.
Office and projects manager of UJW, Cindy Kree said, “Thanks to the generosity of various donors, the school has been equipped with sewing machines, a plethora of fabrics, and all the accoutrements of a professional sewing school. It was difficult to believe that six months prior to the course, these students did not even know how to use a sewing machine.”
UJW said the aim of the sewing school is to empower unemployed people and equip them with the required skills to ultimately be in a position to support themselves.
The students will produce bags, aprons, tablecloths and other items which, once made, can be ordered through the Johannesburg branch of the UJW.
