Residents rave over reservoir repair

DUNKELD – For months, if not years, concern from Dunkeld residents grew and grew as they watched countless litres of fresh water flow down Kent Avenue and simply seep away into the pavements.

It was originally thought to be a leak from the reservoir’s overflow pipe.

Recent reports of severe droughts throughout South Africa have only made matters worse, but it also made members of the Dunkeld Village Association focus even harder on getting Johannesburg Water to assess the problem and fix it once and for all.

Through perseverance and determination, the association finally managed to get the entity to look at the issue. Johannesburg Water officials found that the leak was coming from the bypass pipework within the reservoir complex.

“The challenge we face is that the pipe is quite corroded and needs replacement,” said Johannesburg Water official, Hilgard Matthews.

The Johannesburg Water Reservoir in Dunkeld is finally being repaired after leaking for ages.

“We have attempted some interim repairs to try and weld the affected section, but have not been very successful as the pipe is pitted badly on certain spots.”

Matthews added that the leak appeared to have lessened after their attempts to repair it, but had not been entirely resolved as yet. “Our plan of action is that we have instituted an emergency replacement/repair to the affected section,” continued Matthews, but he vowed to see that the problem was fully solved in the near future.

“Please bear with us while we try and resolve this matter permanently,” Matthews requested of local residents.

Anthony Still, councillor for Ward 90 in which Dunkeld is situated, commended the entity’s efforts.

“I am pleased to see that this matter is in the process of being resolved,” said Still.

“It is much better than it was. And to add to that, thanks must go to the Dunkeld Village Association for their persistence in getting answers to this problem.”
