A special form of tender, loving care

FOREST TOWN – True beauty goes further than merely being skin deep.

This is what pupils at Forest Town School, a special needs school for children with learning disabilities, are learning through a work experience programme and occupational therapy.

The work experience programme, which was initiated 10 years ago, has been vital in teaching pupils how to integrate into the working environment and earn a normal, day to day living.

As part of this programme, the school has opened the Beauty Therapy Centre, or BTC as the pupils prefer to refer to it, and occupational therapist at the school, Roshni Bosman, wants to let local ladies know they are open for business – and that their prices are also highly competitive compared to other beauty salons.

“[The programme] has been instrumental in the creation and development of work for learners suffering from physical as well as cognitive challenges,” explained Bosman.

“It has been recognised as a successful venture by the Department of Education, Department of Labour, as well as Seta [Sector Education and Training Authority]. We focus on skills development and the transition from learner to work programme.

“All the ladies here have been fully trained by various service providers and they operate a full-service beauty centre, as well as train upcoming programme learners,” Bosman continued.

The following services are offered by the centre:

  • Manicures and pedicures
  • Massages (back, neck and shoulder, Indian head massages, hand and foot massages)
  • Hairstyling for both ladies and gents (washing, blowing, ironing, and relaxing).

Bosman concluded by saying that she wanted the local community to come and try out the services they provided which will, in turn, support the school and assist in keeping the programme running for future disabled learners to also take part in.
