Powerless over Sandringham Library

SANDRINGHAM - The North Eastern Tribune has received a number of complaints regarding electricity at Sandringham Library, with a local resident indicating that the library has been without electricity for more than 10 days.

When a team from North Eastern Tribune visited the library, the manager stated that he was unable to comment and refused to provide information regarding the matter. The manager provided a telephone number to call and assured the team that someone would be able to provide further information.

Ward 72 councillor, Steven Kruger also received numerous complaints about the library.

Kruger said, “I have had City Power onsite and, unfortunately, they confirm that it is an internal electrical fault involving the feed from the Jabula Recreation Centre to the library and, therefore, the repairs need to be arranged and paid for by the library.”

A sign outside Sandringham Library states that the library will close earlier due to power failure.

Kruger addressed the matter with the City of Joburg and received feedback from the City of Johannesburg Library and Information Services director, Nobuntu Mpendulo.

Mpendulo informed Kruger that it will cost a large sum of money to fix the electricity problem at the library. “We have to go through the approval process. There is no truth in saying there is no money, as the department has a budget for repairs and maintenance. The quotes were submitted to the [City of Joburg’s] facilities unit, which is supposed to approve and then select the service provider. I am attending to the matter and will keep you updated,” said Mpendulo.
