Thousands of Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) members brought the Johannesburg CBD to a halt with their #PayBackTheMoney Pay Back The Money march to the Constitutional Court on 9 February.
The EFF members gathered at the Mary Fitzgerald Square in Newtown where the party’s commander in chief, Julius Malema, addressed them before they began their march to the court.
This comes after President Jacob Zuma agreed to pay back the money liable for non-security upgrades at his Nkandla homestead in KwaZulu-Natal.

While EFF members painted Johannesburg red with their outfits, the Constitutional Court was listening to arguments from the EFF and the Democratic Alliance relating to Public Protector Thuli Madonsela’s report on the upgrades.
While addressing the crowd at Mary Fitzgerald Square, Malema said they were marching to make sure that Zuma paid back the money. “We are now putting a lot of pressure on the ANC, it is for the first time they are getting real opposition. We are fighting for a black nation and we are not ashamed of that,” said Malema while the crowd chanted his name.
“Where will the president get the money to pay back R155 million? So we are protecting the Constitution,” he said.

EFF member, Walter Kwatsi, said they were tired of the ruling party and the president must pay back the money so that it could be used for service delivery needs. “Why did he fire the finance minister and why is he taking too long to pay back the money?” he asked.
Malema urged the crowd to march peacefully and not to create unnecessary tension.
