22 charges against FW de Klerk for apartheid crimes

JOBURG - A newly-formed group known as the Anti-Racism Action Forum (Araf) has opened up a criminal case against former President FW de Klerk for crimes committed against black people during apartheid.

The forum gathered at Hillbrow Police Station on 3 February, where members of the forum listed a combined total of 22 criminal charges against De Klerk and former Minister of Law and Order, Adriaan Vlok.

Spokesperson for Araf, Yerushka Chetty said, “Araf shall lay 22 criminal charges against both FW De Klerk and Adriaan Vlok for crimes committed against black people for which they didn’t get amnesty at the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC).”

Araf wants De Klerk and Vlok to answer for the Boipatong and Bisho massacres, including township and train killings before 1994.

In 1998, Vlok revealed to the TRC that De Klerk knew of illegal security force operations. De Klerk refuted the allegations and refused to apply for amnesty.

Spokesperson for Hillbrow Police Station Mduduzi Zondo said, “It has been confirmed that a case has been opened against former President FW de Klerk. Police will investigate the matter.”

After laying the charges at the Hillbrow Police Station, the forum headed off to the South African Human Rights Commission to charge De Klerk with several counts of racism.
