Security guard allegedly shoots suspect in Hillbrow

HILLBROW - Hillbrow police officers recently arrested two suspects after they robbed a man of an undisclosed amount of money and his cellphone in Hillbrow.

The victim was walking along the street at about 10pm on 26 January when he was approached by two men, one brandishing a gun.

Spokesperson for Hillbrow Police Station, Sergeant Mduduzi Zondo said, “The two suspects allegedly robbed the man of his personal belongings and then ran away.”

According to a statement given by the victim, after the suspects ran away, he approached a security guard in the area and asked him for assistance. They then walked in the same direction as the suspects.

Zondo said, “The suspects were followed and stopped on the corner of Claim and Leyds streets [by the security guard and the victim].”

According to Zondo, one suspect then allegedly pulled out a firearm and pointed it at both the guard and the robbery victim.

The guard then allegedly retaliated and shot the one suspect in the leg.

Police were called to the scene and upon arrival, arrested both suspects.

Zondo said, “Both suspects have been arrested for armed robbery and possession of an unlicenced firearm.”

The suspects will appear in court soon.
