According to media reports, Johannesburg police are searching for the mother of the child.
Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini told news24 that a security guard noticed movement from the plastic bag near Jeppe High School for Boys yesterday.
The guard took the girl to Jeppe Police station. The girl was then taken to hospital and a place of safety thereafter.
Ccases of child abandonment and attempted murder have been opened.
