GDE fails feeding scheme providers

JOBURG – Gauteng Department of Education has admitted to its failure to pay several feeding scheme service providers which lead to pupils not having their meals at their respective schools.

Gauteng Department of Education’s acting spokesperson, Oupa Bodibe said the department was aware of the challenge surrounding the payment of some school nutrition service providers. “On 5 January, the department made payment to a number of service providers to the tune of R62 million which reflected into the provider’s accounts this morning. The department is in the process of effecting more payments this week that will incrementally reduce the number of affected service providers.”

Bodibe also added that on the issue of pupils not receiving food at school, the department had a rescue team in place to deliver on behalf of service providers who had not been able to deliver to schools. He said, “The majority of service providers continue to make deliveries to schools and it’s only a few service provides who had been unable to.”
