Skype helps save parents during robbery

PARKTOWN – The lives of a mother and father were saved through the use of social media after they were attacked by armed robbers in their home on 11 January.

According to the News24 report,  Govan and Tessa Reddy returned home from a night out before Tessa began a Skype call with her son in Paris, while Govan opted to go upstairs.

Thinking they were alone in the house, Tessa suddenly heard her husband speaking to someone else, asking the other person what they were doing in their residence.

The alleged suspect threatened Govan with a firearm before descending downstairs to where Tessa was. Tessa told her son in France that something was wrong before the video feed was turned off, but her son could still hear the suspect, who had been joined by another, continue to threaten the Reddy couple in their Melville home. The Skype call was still connected.

The son in France managed to get hold of his brother who resides in Parktown, who quickly made his way to his parents’ home, alerting police and security companies along the way.

The suspects escaped through the back door after they heard police and security forces arrive, taking cash and electrical equipment worth R60 000 with them. They have not been apprehended as yet.
