Mechanics operating illegally cause a headache for residents and police

JOBURG - Car mechanics who are working illegally on the corner of Grenville and Louis Botha avenues in Savoy Estate are causing a headache for residents and police in the area.

According to residents, the mechanics have been operating there for years. They feel the mechanics are a hindrance and are jeopardising businesses in the area.

One of the concerned residents, Sydney Kanichowsky said, “We need to make sure that the public is aware that if they bring their cars to be repaired in that area, they run the risk of having their cars impounded by Metro police.

“The City of Johannesburg bylaws state that the fixing of cars in the street is illegal… Metro police impound the cars and chase away the mechanics, as they are not allowed to arrest them.”

Sergeant Eric Mathe of Bramley police confirmed this and said all they could do was to keep on monitoring the area.

Ward 74 Councillor Jack Cooper said he has been trying to resolve the issue. “A possible solution would be for the spares shop to provide working space for the mechanics, that is how it was resolved in Kew,” he said.
