Councillor gives election update

PARKHURST – Ward 117 councillor, Tim Truluck has requested that new residents living in Craighall, Parkhurst, Parktown North, Rosebank, Saxonwold and Parkwood who have not yet registered for the 2016 municipal elections, to diarise the weekend of 5 and 6 March for voter registration in his ward.

“There seems to be quite a bit of uncertainty about when the voter registration days and the election date will be,” said Truluck.

“Just before Christmas, we were told that the February registration weekend had been cancelled, leaving just one weekend where residents can register or re-register to vote [in March].”

He further wanted to remind residents that, in a municipal election, one can only vote where one is registered. Thus, anyone who has moved away from where they are registered needs to re-register at the nearest voting station, or they will have to return to the voting station where they are registered.

“It is not such a train smash if you have moved, say, from Melville to Parkhurst,” Truluck continued.

“You can easily go and queue in Melville. But if you have moved here from, say, Durban, then it is likely you won’t be able to travel to go and vote.”

He said that while residents could go to the IEC website (www.elections.org.za) and check their registration details themselves, he will offer his services to those incorrectly registered by advising whether they need to re-register and where the nearest voting station is.
