There’s something brewing

JOBURG - In the artisan world of Maboneng, there is something brewing and it tastes even better than it smells.

Chances are that if you’ve been to Maboneng, you’ve seen Origin.

It’s a super trendy purist brewery – and yes, it is what you’re thinking – they serve only speciality coffees and teas at this one-of-a-kind cafe.

Origin was established in Cape Town more than 10 years ago under the leadership of owner and founder, Joel Singer, and the cafe was one of the first artisanal coffee roasters in the country.

Belinda Flynn, barista and relationship manager of the company, decided that the cafe, which had seen major expansions in the Mother City, needed to be opened in one of the trendiest cities in South Africa.

For more than two years, the second Origin cafe has been situated in Maboneng, but they also take their craft to various markets, including Neighbourgoods.

What makes the brewery unique is the care they take about what goes into the java they produce, in addition to their use of small batches of coffee beans produced by certain farmers which are then roasted by speciality baristas.

“We can even tell you the name of our farmers,” said Flynn.

“What I like about the owner, Joel, is that he only hires coffee people and not business people because we’re passionate about coffee.”

The cafe strives to encapsulate principles of locality, freshness, sustainability and expertise; and the super-friendly trained staff are no strangers to brewing a great cup of coffee or tea.

“Half the battle is getting a good coffee bean and the other half is training your barista to make the coffee well,” added Flynn.

“So you cannot use origin coffee unless you have a trained barista by someone who has experience as a barista – that’s what I love about Origin.”
