Nine arrested on New Year’s Eve

HILLBROW - Following a joint operation between Metro police, the South African Police Service, paramedics and disaster management officers, nine suspects were arrested in Hillbrow on New Year's Eve.

Chief Superintendent and spokesperson of Metro police, Wayne Minnaar said, “The statistical breakdown of the arrests were as follows: Three for assault, one for rape, two for stolen motor vehicles, one for possession of a dagger and two for drunken driving.”

During the joint operation, police also managed to confiscate 12 packets of nyaope which were dumped by suspects, who then fled the scene before police could approach them.

Minnaar said, “Four dangerous weapons were recovered which included knives and pangas.” Six problematic buildings were searched and several dangerous weapons, including knives and pangas, were confiscated.

“Joint operations over the years have seen a reduction in major incidents in Johannesburg, especially during New Year’s Day celebrations.”
