Road safety concerns in Highlands North and Norwood

NORWOOD - The North Eastern Tribune has received numerous complaints from residents regarding roads in Norwood and Highlands North.

With the BRT Rea Vaya construction along Louis Botha Avenue, a number of roads have been resurfaced which has led to stop signs being taken away and not replaced.

Bertha Peters-Scheepers, spokesperson of Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) previously told North Eastern Tribune that the JRA regional team will ensure that the necessary remedial action is undertaken to ensure the roads are safe for travel within communities.

Local resident Daphne Bekker said she has been trying for months to get the city council to paint stop signs along 8th Avenue, as there appear to be none.

Bekker said, “Can anybody please help as the cars are crossing the cross roads without stopping and nearly caused accidents. On the corner of 8th Avenue and Hamlin Street, which is such a busy road, there is no stop sign and the 8th Avenue sign has been painted with white paint by JRA so nobody can see [it].”

On the matter which Bekker raised, Scheepers said, “Thank you for raising the Norwood and Highlands North road markings and signs with the JRA.”
