Zoo Lake swimming pool closed due to chemical shortage

PARKVIEW- The Zoo Lake Swimming Pool has been closed until the relevant chemicals arrive.

The Zoo Lake Swimming Pool has been closed due to a chemical shortage.

This comes after some residents took to social media to share the state of the pool. “This happens every year. The City’s procurement plan is not very efficient, a lot of things run out. Now the pool has been closed due to the fact that there are not enough chemicals and the pool has gone green,” said Ward 117 councillor Tim Truluck.

He added that in the past, the City would deal with the issue of the water going green by simply pumping out the water and refilling the pool with fresh water. Now, however, he emphasised that with the water restrictions in place, he is not sure if they will be able to go that route as the pool is Olympic-sized.

In the provisions set out under the City of Johannesburg’s Metropolitan Municipality Public Health bylaws, water in the swimming pool should be purified, treated and maintained to an adequate quality at all times.

However, when the Rosebank Killarney Gazette contacted the Regional E acting manager for Sports and Recreation, Elsie Mokgoedo, she commented that there was just a slight delay with the transportation of the chemicals. “We are just waiting for it to arrive, it has been bought already at the store,” she said.
